ENIGMA station identification
The ENIGMA (also known as ENIGMA2000) is an online community, which aims at discussing number stations with users, exchanging station logs and sharing thoughts and opinions on the matter. ENIGMA also maintains the ENIGMA Control List, which according to their site is "the definitive listing of number station identification".
One important thing to note is that the language spoken in a number station transmission doesn't explicitly reflect their broadcast origin. As an example, the G22 station was broadcasted from Bulgaria, but its messages were in German. This is another safety measure for making a station difficult to trace back to its origin.
This is how the identification listing works:
Stations are mainly divided in 5 groups, corresponding to the language they're broadcasted in. These are E for English, G for German, S for Slavic, V for other languages and X for noise/alternative stations.
E and G are self-explanatory. S contains Slavic languages such as Russian, Bulgarian, Ukrainian, Serbian, etc. V represents languages that do not belong to the former groups - those include romanic languages (Spanish, French, Portugese, etc.), Asian languages and other more uncommon ones to be heard during broadcasts. Each notable station is assigned with a number which follows after the language identifier.
For example, the Lincolnshire Poacher is a station that's broadcasted in English and it's been assigned the number 03. This makes its ENIGMA ID E03.
The following table includes the ENIGMA IDs and the "names" of some of my favorite stations. What makes a station interesting to me is its use of music/respective callsign, broadcasting quality and overall uniqueness and presentation. I personally find there to be charm in degraded media and some broadcasts' low-quality transmissions are certainly appealing to me.
Clicking on the names of the stations will bring you to a page with more information about them, as well as audio examples.
